An Affordable Express Oil Change for Mount Tabor’s Cars

Mount Tabor is unlike anywhere else in Morris County. It began in 1869 as a Methodist camp meeting ground, and the tent lots of that first summer became the ornate Victorian cottages that still line the hill today. It is a community of steep grades, tight turns and lanes that were laid out for people walking to a tabernacle, not for two-way traffic.

All of which shapes how the cars there get used. Trips are short. You come down the hill for groceries, for the train, for school, and you go back up. An engine on that pattern spends a lot of its life below full operating temperature, which is exactly the condition under which oil degrades fastest — and it is why a Mount Tabor car benefits from a good synthetic more than a car doing steady highway miles.

Hogwash Oil Change Center is at 1600 US-46, Parsippany, NJ 07054, in the same township. The bay is drive-thru: you stay in the driver’s seat while a technician drains the old oil, fits a new filter, fills with Mobil 1 and checks your fluids. No appointment, and you stay in your vehicle the whole time.

Why Synthetic Oil Earns Its Keep on Short Trips

Most advice about oil assumes an average car doing average miles. Mount Tabor cars are not that. A one-mile run down to Route 53 in January never lets the engine get hot enough to boil off the moisture and unburned fuel that collect in the oil, and those contaminants are what thin the oil and let deposits form. Do it twice a day for a winter and the oil is working harder than the odometer suggests.

That is the case for Mobil 1. We stock it exclusively, in full synthetic and high-mileage formulas. Mobil 1 full synthetic is known for engine protection, efficiency and performance, and it keeps a stable film in exactly the cold-start conditions that give conventional oil the most trouble. If the car is older — and plenty of well-kept older cars live on that hill — the high-mileage formula is often the better fit. Our technicians will tell you which one your engine calls for rather than defaulting to whichever is on the shelf.

The rest is about not making the errand worse than the problem. Every Mobil 1 oil change here includes a new oil filter and a fluid check, done with the latest equipment by technicians who work quickly because the format is fast, not because steps get skipped. Competitive pricing and walk-in service mean a Tabor resident can come down the hill, get it done and be back before the afternoon is gone.

The car wash shares the property too, which matters on a hill where road salt sits in the wheel wells all winter.

Coming Down the Hill to Our Bay on Route 46

Mount Tabor sits above Route 53 and Route 10 on the Parsippany side of the township, and both roads lead to Route 46 quickly.

From Trinity Park and the cottage streets

Work your way down the hill to Route 53, then north to Route 46 and follow it east into Parsippany. Take the narrow streets slowly on the way out; once you are on 53 it is a straight run.

From the Route 10 side

Route 10 runs right past the Mount Tabor section of Parsippany. Take it to Route 53, then north to Route 46, and follow 46 east to 1600 US-46.

From Mount Tabor station

The station, served by limited Morristown Line trains, sits at the bottom of the hill, one stop before Morris Plains on the old Lackawanna alignment. If you drive to the train, the detour to us on the way home is small — and we are open until 6:00 PM on Friday and Saturday.

Pull into the drive-thru bay, put the car in park and stay put. When the oil change is finished you drive out the far side. The car wash is at the same location if you want one on the same trip.

Mobil 1 Oil Change, Plus What a Hillside Car Tends to Need

The core service is a Mobil 1 oil change: full synthetic or high-mileage Mobil 1, a new oil filter and a fluid check, done while you sit in the car. Around it, our technicians handle the maintenance that Mount Tabor driving quietly accelerates.

Tire rotation

Steep grades and tight, low-speed corners are hard on front tires in particular. A tire rotation spreads that wear across all four and slots easily onto an oil change.

Engine and cabin air filters

The hill is heavily wooded and leaf litter is a fact of life from September onward. Replacing the engine air filter and cabin air filter keeps airflow clean and is quick to fit during your visit.

Fuel injection service

Cold, short runs are the classic recipe for injector deposits. A fuel injection service clears them and restores the engine’s efficiency.

Fluids, belts and wipers

We also handle transmission flush, radiator flush and fill, differential service, serpentine belt inspection and wiper blade replacement. Ask in the bay; our technicians will tell you what is available. The full list is on our services page.

Mount Tabor: A Camp Meeting Ground on the Hill

Mount Tabor has one of the most distinctive histories in Morris County. It was founded in 1869 as a Methodist camp meeting ground, and its layout still shows it: small cottage lots and narrow, hilly streets that were designed for a summer gathering place, not for today’s traffic. Much of the community is a historic district, and it hosts an annual house tour.

Mount Tabor is part of Parsippany-Troy Hills, the same township as our shop, and Route 53 runs along the community on its way between Denville and Morris Plains. The Mount Tabor station on NJ Transit’s Morristown Line, with limited service, sits just to the west, in Denville. The community also has its own branch of the Parsippany Library, at 31 Trinity Place.

Life on the hill shapes how cars are used. Steep grades and tight streets mean lots of low-speed driving, frequent braking and short trips down to the main roads, and that kind of use is hard on oil that never gets fully warm. A regular schedule with the right oil is the simple answer. Our oil change page compares the four oils we offer.

Neighbors in Denville, Morris Plains and Lake Hiawatha have their own pages too.

Mount Tabor is one of several distinct communities inside Parsippany-Troy Hills, the most populous municipality in Morris County; Lake Hiawatha is another. Route 53, which runs past the community, is a short state highway of about 4.66 miles, beginning at US 202 in Morris Plains and ending at I-80 and US 46 in Denville. For Mount Tabor drivers that makes it the everyday link to the larger roads, including Route 46, where our drive-thru bay is. The community’s library branch is one of three Parsippany Library locations.

Library materials can be borrowed from any of the township’s facilities and requested for pickup at the location closest to home.

Oil Change Questions From Mount Tabor

Here are some of the most common questions about our services at Hogwash.

We are at 1600 US-46, Parsippany, NJ 07054, in the same township as Mount Tabor. Coming down off the hill puts you on Route 53 or Route 10, and both connect to Route 46.

An engine that never reaches full operating temperature does not burn off the moisture and fuel that collect in the oil. That is normal for a hillside community where most trips are a mile or two, and it is the main reason a full synthetic such as Mobil 1 is a better match than a conventional oil.

No. Drive in whenever we are open: Monday to Saturday until 5:00 PM.

We stock Mobil 1 full synthetic for most engines and Mobil 1 high-mileage for older ones. A technician in the bay will tell you which your vehicle calls for. A new oil filter and a fluid check are included either way.

Yes. The car wash is on the same property as the oil bay, and it stays open on Sundays from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Mobil Super $39.99, Mobil Super High Mileage $69.99, Mobil Super Synthetic $79.99 and Mobil 1 $99.99. Other services have the starting prices listed on this page.

— WHAT TO EXPECT —

Your First Visit From Mount Tabor, Step by Step

A typical Mount Tabor visit starts slowly and then gets quick. You ease down the hill and out onto Route 53, and from there Route 46 takes you to 1600 US-46. Pull into the bay, stay in the seat. The technician has the old oil out and the new filter on while you talk through whether the car wants full synthetic or high-mileage Mobil 1. Fluids get checked, and if the wipers have been streaking since the last storm, mention it. You drive out the far side, take a wash on the same lot if the salt has built up, and head back up the hill. Monday through Saturday, plan around a 5:00 PM close.

Between visits, treat the oil-life indicator as the guide rather than a number you half-remember. On a car doing mostly one and two-mile runs, that interval will come up sooner than you expect. If a warning light or a burnt smell arrives first, call 973-335-3000.
