Boonton sits at the top of the hill above the Rockaway River. Come down to Route 46, pull into our bay, and get a Mobil 1 oil change without leaving the driver’s seat.
Boonton is compact, about two and a half square miles, and its Main Street is famously pitched against the hillside above the Hollow of the Rockaway River. Interstate 287 and U.S. Route 202 both run through the center of town, and Boonton borders Parsippany directly, so getting to Hogwash Oil Change Center at 1600 US-46, Parsippany, NJ 07054 is straightforward from any direction you pick.
From the shops and galleries on Main Street, from Church, Birch, Cornelia and Cedar Streets in the historic district, or from the library on Main, head down toward Route 202 and pick up I-287 south into Parsippany, then follow Route 46 to 1600 US-46. Pull in.
Boonton station on the Montclair-Boonton Line is a daily stop for a lot of households in town, and commuters can head to Route 46 by car after getting off the train. Commuters can swing through on the way home; we are open until 6:00 PM on Friday and Saturday.
Homes near the Mountain Lakes line can drop straight down to Route 46. From the Montville side of town, Route 202 or I-287 south both lead into Parsippany.
When you arrive, pull into the drive-thru bay, put the car in park and stay put. When the oil change is done, you drive out. The car wash is at the same location if you want a wash on the same trip.
Boonton was built as an iron town on the Morris Canal, and its street plan still shows it: steep grades between Main Street and the river, tight blocks downtown, and a lot of stop-and-start driving to get anywhere. Add I-287 running through the middle of town and you get a mix of hill driving and highway miles that is hard on engine oil in both directions. Cold starts and short trips let moisture and deposits build up; highway heat thins a conventional oil down. A full synthetic like Mobil 1 is made for exactly that combination.
Hogwash Oil Change Center is a drive-thru lube center on Route 46 in Parsippany, one town over. The format is simple: you drive into the bay and stay behind the wheel while a technician swaps the oil and filter and runs through your fluids. There is no appointment to book, and you stay in your vehicle. Every change uses Mobil 1, full synthetic or high-mileage depending on the engine, because it protects well over a long interval.
For a town whose downtown fills up on first-Friday art walks and whose commuters are on 287 every weekday, a drive-thru oil change with no appointment, where you stay in your vehicle, is the practical choice. That is what express lube means here: in the bay, done, back on the road.
An express oil change near Boonton should be quick because the process is efficient, not because steps are skipped. Every Mobil 1 oil change at Hogwash includes a new oil filter and a fluid check, and our technicians provide fast, reliable oil changes with attention to detail using the latest equipment. The drive-thru format is what makes it fast: you stay in your vehicle while the work is done.
The oil is the other half of it. We use Mobil 1 exclusively. Mobil 1 full synthetic is known for engine protection, efficiency and performance, and it holds up to the hill-and-highway pattern Boonton cars live with. For an older vehicle with plenty of Boonton miles, the high-mileage formula is the better fit. Our technicians will tell you which one your engine calls for.
Pricing is competitive, the staff is friendly and no appointment is necessary. And because the car wash shares the location, a car that has climbed salted grades all winter can leave with clean oil and a clean exterior in one stop.
The core service is a Mobil 1 oil change: full synthetic or high-mileage Mobil 1, a new oil filter and a fluid check, done while you sit in the car. Around it, our technicians handle the routine maintenance a Boonton car picks up over a year of hills and highway.
Steep streets and hard braking on the way down to the river wear front tires faster than rears. A tire rotation evens that out.
Tree cover along the Rockaway River, Grace Lord Park and the older neighborhoods means pollen in spring and leaf debris in fall. An engine air filter and cabin air filter replacement keeps air moving to the engine and to you.
Short in-town trips up and down the hill do not fully warm an engine, and injector deposits build up. A fuel injection service cleans them out and restores efficiency.
We also handle transmission flush, radiator flush and fill, differential service, serpentine belt inspection and wiper blade replacement. Ask in the bay for details. The full list is on our services page.

Boonton’s story is written along the Rockaway River. Grace Lord Park, in the heart of town, is home to the 36-foot Boonton Falls and to the remains of the Boonton Ironworks. The fall line of the river once generated the water power that drew industry to the site.
The ironworks relied on the nearby Morris Canal both for power and for moving materials in and out, and it helped Boonton grow through much of the 19th century. The 1870s brought setbacks, including the economic panic of 1873, a fire and the discovery of more accessible iron deposits in the West, and the works finally closed in 1911. In 2023 the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Boonton Ironworks Historic District, a 53-acre district in Grace Lord Park that includes an arch bridge and sections of the Morris Canal.
The park itself has a history, too. In 1929 the estate of James Couper Lord deeded park land on the south side of the river to the town in honor of his daughter, Grace Lord Nicoll. Over the 20th century the park had a bandstand and a swimming beach.
Upstream is a different kind of history. The original village of Old Boonton, where a forge once made cannonballs for the Continental Army, now lies under the waters of the Jersey City Reservoir.
Modern Boonton is a town of hills, historic streets and commuters, with I-287 and US 202 running through the center of town. A hillside town with steady commuting is hard on engines, so regular maintenance matters here. See neighboring Mountain Lakes and Montville, or all of Morris County.
The ironworks shaped more than industry. The company that ran it built Boonton’s first school, a one-room building on company property, in 1831, and the town opened the School Street School in 1852. The railroad left its mark, too: a steel trestle over the Rockaway River, built in 1906 to replace an 1867 wooden trestle destroyed by a 1905 flood, carried an industrial spur of the Morris and Essex Railroad, and it still stands in Grace Lord Park.
One more local detail trips up newcomers. The Town of Boonton, with about 8,800 residents, is a separate municipality from Boonton Township, a more rural community of about 4,400 residents to its west. Our page covers the town, though drivers from both are welcome in our bay on Route 46.
Grace Lord Park has drawn visitors for a long time. A large boulder in the park, also known as Washington Rock, has been one of its attractions since the 1870s, and just above the old stone arch bridge the Rockaway River begins its descent at Boonton Falls. The town has sought National Register status for that bridge to qualify for restoration funding, and a repaired bridge would open hiking access along an extended Morris Canal Greenway. For residents, the park is a reminder that the river that once powered Boonton’s mills still runs right through the center of town.
