Route 46 is the one highway that serves Mountain Lakes, and our bay is on it. Pull in, stay in your seat, and leave with fresh Mobil 1 full synthetic. No appointment.
Mountain Lakes is a small borough, under three square miles, and almost all of its roads are quiet municipal streets that wind between the lakes and the old stucco Hapgood houses. U.S. Route 46 is the only major highway that directly serves the borough; Interstate 80 and Interstate 287 both pass just outside its line in Parsippany. So when a Mountain Lakes driver needs anything done to the car, the trip almost always starts by getting onto Route 46. Hogwash Oil Change Center is at 1600 US-46, Parsippany, NJ 07054, on that same highway, which makes a fast synthetic oil change near Mountain Lakes about as simple as it can get.
Here the oil change happens with you still in the driver’s seat. Roll into the bay, and while you sit, a technician drains the old oil, threads on a new filter, fills the engine with the Mobil 1 formula it calls for and looks over your fluids. Nothing to schedule, and you stay in your vehicle. The oil on our shelf is Mobil 1 and only Mobil 1, full synthetic and high-mileage, picked for how well it protects an engine over a long interval.
Because the borough borders Parsippany to the east and south, the run from Mountain Lakes to our bay is short from any part of town. From the Boulevard, from the streets around Birchwood Lake and Wildwood Lake, from the neighborhood near the train station on Midvale Road, or from the homes up toward The Tourne, Route 46 is the road that brings you to the shop.
The core service is a Mobil 1 oil change: full synthetic or high-mileage Mobil 1, a new oil filter and a fluid check, done while you sit in the car. For most Mountain Lakes vehicles, full synthetic is the right call. Cold starts on shaded lake streets, short runs to the station or the schools and the occasional highway trip on I-80 or I-287 are exactly the mix that makes a synthetic oil worth having.
Hilly, curving borough streets load the front tires more than a flat grid does. A tire rotation evens out the wear and is easy to add to an oil change visit.
Mountain Lakes has heavy tree cover, and part of The Tourne county park sits inside the borough. Pollen in spring and leaf litter in fall clog filters faster than they would on an open highway. Ask about an engine air filter and cabin air filter replacement.
A car that does mostly short in-town trips rarely gets fully warm, and injector deposits build up. A fuel injection service cleans those deposits and restores efficiency.
We also handle transmission flush, radiator flush and fill, differential service, serpentine belt inspection and wiper blade replacement. Ask in the bay for details. See the full list on our services page.
Mountain Lakes has roughly 29 miles of roadway and most of it is maintained by the borough itself; only about a mile of it is state highway, and that mile is Route 46. Every part of town connects to it. Once you are on 46 into Parsippany, look for 1600 US-46. Pull in, and you are in the bay.
The borough was laid out as a planned community from 1910, so its streets curve around seven man-made lakes rather than running on a grid. Roads near Mountain Lake, Crystal Lake, Sunset Lake and Cove Lake are narrow, hilly and tree-lined, which is beautiful in October and hard on a car in February when salt and slush sit in the shade. Follow the Boulevard or Fanny Road down to Route 46.
The Mountain Lakes station on Midvale Road serves the Montclair-Boonton Line, and plenty of residents drive to it every weekday. The station is a short hop from Route 46, so a commuter can stop for an oil change on the way home; we are open until 6:00 PM on Friday and Saturday.
Homes near the Boonton Township and Boonton line can also drop down to Route 46 through Parsippany or Boonton. Either way the shop is on the highway, not on a side street you have to hunt for.
When you arrive, pull into the drive-thru bay, put the car in park and stay put. When the oil change is done, you drive out. The car wash is at the same location if you want a wash on the same trip.
Mountain Lakes was designed as a residential park, and that is still what it feels like. There is no commercial strip inside the borough; residents go out to Route 46 for nearly everything. That makes a shop that sits on Route 46 the natural fit, and a drive-thru shop the practical one. Nobody moves your car, you never leave the driver’s seat, and the visit fits inside a trip you were already making.
The oil itself is the second reason. We use Mobil 1 exclusively, in full synthetic and high-mileage formulas. Mobil 1 full synthetic is known for engine protection, efficiency and performance, and it holds up under the repeated cold starts and short trips that a borough of quiet streets produces. For an older vehicle with a lot of Mountain Lakes miles, the high-mileage formula is the better fit. Our technicians will tell you which one your car calls for.
The third reason is how the work is done. Our technicians provide fast, reliable oil changes with attention to detail and use the latest equipment, and the fluid check is part of every oil change rather than an add-on. Add competitive pricing and friendly staff, and it is an easy stop for Mountain Lakes drivers.
And because the car wash shares the location, a car that has spent the winter on salted lake roads can leave with clean oil and a clean exterior in the same stop.

Mountain Lakes looks the way it does because it was planned. In 1910 the area was rural woodland owned by a handful of families. Within about ten years it became a planned suburban community of large stucco houses, designed by local engineer Lewis Van Duyne and built mainly by developer Herbert J. Hapgood. Residents still call those homes Hapgoods, and the original design remains largely intact.
The lakes have their own story. Birchwood, Crystal and Sunset lakes, first known as the Fox Hill Lakes, were created for the ice trade of the late 1800s, when ice was cut into blocks and shipped by rail to city ice boxes. Today the borough counts nine lakes within its boundaries and a two-mile walking path known as the Boulevard. It covers about 2.9 square miles and is served by NJ Transit’s Montclair-Boonton Line.
A borough of curving lake roads, hills and short trips is easy on the odometer but not always easy on oil, which is why many local drivers stick to a regular schedule. See neighboring Boonton and Denville.
A few older homes predate the planned community. The Righter House on Pocono Road is considered the oldest house in Mountain Lakes, and the Grimes Homestead once served as a station on the Underground Railroad.
